Back in classes

Well, I am back in college. I'm taking 6 classes this semester, and as long as I pass, I'll have my English degree. I just had a midterm in postmodernism with Dr. Idris. It required a lot memorization of lines, which I was not ready for. I'll try and keep everyone updated.

Literary Convention in October in Rockville

Capclave is a small literary convention in Rockville that will be from October 16th through the 18th that hosts workshops, writer's reading, a dealer's room and such.

I wanted to go last year, but I kind of forgot about it just like I did the Renaissance Fair. I possibly might go this year, but with a trip to Japan just next year and possibly going back to college this semester, I might have to hold off.

I hung out with Joe last night and played NHL 09 and drank some LaBatt's Blue beer. Had a little whiskey too. Good night.

Played the demo again for Batman: Arkham Asylum. Simply amazing. I wasn't going to pick it up, but after playing around in the demo, it is a solid title.

P.S. Go see District 9. It is amazing!

There is the link. Beware, it is a PDF file.

In  other news, I am going back to college either later this month or in January to finish my English degree. I'm only 5 classes off, unless I am forced to take something new since its been three years. I did talk to them today and it doesn't seem like I would.

Here's a short story I did for associatedcontent.com and an article I wrote on my Warped Tour visit in Columbia back in July:

Warped Tour in Columbia, Maryland 2009: Organized and yet so Disorganized (But Still Fun)

Get Out! Now! Hurry!

This is a flash piece for a contest on associatedcontent.com that required to use one of three generic starting sentences. The piece is about a guy that is more worried about what his neighbors are wearing than the invasion of extra terrestrials.

In my hotel in Baltimore

I'm here at the Days Inn across from the Convention Center. I forgot my deodorant, acid reflux bills, body spray, and my phone charger. They all are sorely needed. The only thing I can't pick up here is my phone charger which sucks so I had my phone off for most of today and will have it off for most of tomorrow. I'll keep it on for most of Saturday to get a hold of Cathy and Boon.

The line took about an hour and fifteen minutes to get through. It was at 8 and the line was so humid even as the sun set in the bay's horizon. Had a few minutes to go to Barnes and Noble, but not much. Might stop there and Best Buy before I leave on Sunday since neither are back home.

Maybe I'll update every day, but I don't know.

REMINDER: Japanese Pro Wrestling panel at 8:30 in Panel 3 tomorrow (Friday) night which I'll be a presenter.

It's been a while

I realized that I haven't been very active on here recently. February was my last post. Right now, I've been on a marathon of the original series of Star Trek as I'm going to have the entire original series finished before the new movie. As a joke, my friend Mik and I talked about dressing up for the movie. So, we decided that we are going to. I'm going as Dr. McCoy, or Bones, and Mik is going as Capt. Kirk in the casual dress shirt. Should be pretty odd. I'm not an extrovert that would usually do something like this, but I need to be more spontaneous and not care what everyone thinks.

So, my old club name is being used.

I used to belong to the 3AM Society, a creative writing society in college.

While searching for literary magazines to publish my backlog of fiction pieces, I just stumbled upon a magazine barring a similar name: 3:AM Magazine.

I've been getting stories edited and have been sending them out to every place known to man since the start of this month. Some good things are coming back already and I can't wait to give some more details here soon.

I've been growing my beard out (I'll post a pic later) and my hair is getting to the length of being curly again. I believe that I will shave and cut my hair, but I'm not 100% percent sure.

I'm off to find an adequate mag to publish a literary fictional flash fiction piece I did and to try to relax after work (which is still 2 1/2 hours away) since the common flu decided to cement my sinus cavity shut.

I'll be in Pittsbrugh in Pennsylvania

On Wednesday, Joe and I will be in Pittsburgh in PA for a Penguins game. Its their first game after the all star break. Hopefully, NHL darling Sidney Crosby will be playing as last year when I went he was out with a severe ankle sprain.

I'll be in town around 1 to do some shopping and soak in the downtown area. I love that city.

The Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania line was provided from The Chappelle's Show when Chappelle dressed up as Howard Dean and did the impression of Dean's yell on a campaign stop. And here it is for everyone to watch.

2008 Review and Happy (late) New Year

Well, I am a little late, but Happy New Year. I had a good 2008. Some good things happened to me.

I opened my website.
I got a story published on Weaponizer.
I made some short radio plays with Lerong Ajang that can be seen here.
I got my PS3 with Metal Gear Solid 4.

I have a few Resolutions this year:

1. Get a good job (this might happen in a month or so). If I don't, I plan on moving somewhere else. Probably New York City.

2. Finish the back stock of DVDs, novels, ideas, and other junk I haven't finished or started.

3. Get Published. I have a lot of stories that will be churned out soon and I will be ready to get as much published as possible.

------

On other news, my desktop got a evil trojan virus called winsinstall.exe. It is new and there was no fix so I had to reboot my PC. This might be a blessing though as it now has given my computer the speed of a drug addict and will allow me to get through some back stuff a little easier which will hepl with resolution #2.

I wanted tomcome home from work and get a lot of stuff done...

but my desktop decided to some horrible malware and out me in a bad mood. Right now, at quarter til 1am, I'm still running different malware and spyware programs that are clearing up the mess.

Whoever made this malware stuff should die the death of a thousand cows from the movie Twister (Assuming that cow they should get slammed into an electric wire and telephone pole.)

I did watch both Fearless Hyena movies in the background while doing some work on my laptop and trying to fix my desktop's problem. The first one is action packed and fun. The second one is rubbish and a waste of time. It also looks like it was ripped from a thirteeith generation VHS copy. A bootleg from Times Square has better contrast and color balance.

Car Troubles

My car decided to leak 8 quarts of oil to and back from Pittsburgh last week on a trip to a job fair which was rather unsatisfying.

It cost me about $450 in repairs. I needed a seal fixed and two new front tires because they told me the front tires were going to shred off at any minute.

I found a cool bittorrent site for fanedits of films called www.fanedit.org. It is really interesting to watch recuts of films. Some movies are totally different with different scenes added deleted and many other changes.

Like father, Like Son

The older I've gotten, the more I've acted like my father. Makes sense, especially since the only difference between our names is the Jr. at the end of mine.

I've gained two of his odder quirks. The first one is the "zone out." I periodically "zone out" anything that is going on around me, but it mostly affects people's speaking. Imagine if I was inside my head and I was listening to a person, almost as if it was a lecture in college. I get up in plain view of the person and walk into my own room full of just my own thoughts and ideas. Also, a projection of myself is left behind so the person doesn't think I left.

The other quirk is I get two names confused. I constantly say Bryan to my friend Mik. It's an odd wiring problem in my head. I my head, thoughts are very visual. So when it comes to seeing Mik, I know his name is Mik. However, my visual interpretation inside my head brings up two names. One is Bryan, with the most generic font (probably Times New Roman) and the other one says Mik with a crazy new age font with neon lights peppering the sides all the while it flashes with bangs of fireworks and flames going off behind it. I still decide to say Bryan though, The question I wonder though is why does my name even bring the word Bryan in the first place?

I moved in some more last night. The only things left at the first house are my bed, TV (with PS3 and othe systems), desktop PC, an exercise bike, and my clothes. They won't be moved in until I settle into the new place for good. I'm helping my Dad move in furniture after work tonight, canceling plans on a 2nd edition of a podcast I'm working on with Lee. I don't have much more information about the podcast as it is a secret project, but last week, we had a blast recording the 1st edition.

New Home

I started moving into a new house on Armstrong St. yesterday. My room isn't ready yet as it is currently a garage that was once a bedroom. The guy that used to live there worked at FSU and NASA before going into a retirement home. So...

I've been doing a lot of cleaning recently, going through old comic books and junk from over the years. It's refreshing actually. Im cleaning out my head of the old ideas that are associated with all of my clutter to gain new ones.

I'm going to a job fair in Pittsburgh on the 23rd. Hopefully something good comes out of it. Pittsburgh is such an amazing city.

Quarter of a Century P.S. i'm getting old.

I am officially 25 now. It's odd. I never thought about getting older when I was younger, but now, it just hits you right in the face like a foul ball at a baseball game.

I've started to change my life for the better recently. I call it self-cleanse. You know, fixing all the clutter accumulated in your physical and mental states over many years. For one thing, I'm moving. Not sure where to. Somewhere close to where I am now, which brings me to my next point: moving out of the area. I'm going to a job fair in Baltimore in October (didn't go to the one last week) and I am getting papers ready to apply to teach English in Japan.

I've been going through a lot of old homework, stories, etc. to see if any of it still has some form of interest. I'm getting back into the history papers again and will be putting some of them on my website. They'll be re-edited and tweaked so they have more flair and better use of facts. And now for my final piece:

I'm going to become a writer. It's very vague, I know, but that's what i plan on doing for the rest of my life. I already finished one novel that I'm soliciting to agents right now. I have a flash fiction piece put on an art site, and have been in talks to get two of my poems in the 1st volume of a new literary magazine.

I'm working (albeit it slowly, but plan on quickening production) on a second novel and will be doing many short stories in the near future. The new main focus is on a website (I don't want to say anymore in fear of giving away the awesome details and having it leaked) and on making a comic book. I'll keep everyone posted on the details.

Step aside NaNoWriMo...Here comes the 3-day novel contest

I heard about this from a message board thread. Here's the official page for the 31st Annual International 3-Day Novel Contest. The contest starts on August 30 and runs through September 1, 2008. Novels must be postmarked on or before Sept. 5, 2008 to qualify. Include a statement, signed by a witness, confirming the novel’s completion over the weekend.

I might try it. Otakon always leaves me with a clean mind open to a lot of possibilities. The major problem though is time. Seriously, three days? It says in the rules page about halfway down that the average submission is 100 pages, doubles spaced. That isn't too bad. I could probably do that in a month. Also, there is a $50 entry fee. That's a bummer.

Post Otakon Depression

Most otaku go through some kind of depressive state from any anime convention. I had one on Tuesday. It happened, like it usually does, when I was by myself and had time to think. All I could think about was how much fun I had at Otakon and seeing people that I haven't seen in a while. Most of the feeling goes away after a day or so, but affects linger on for days. Right now, I still feel it a little.

Otakon's programming wasn't so great this year. I did watch some good stuff. Tokyo Gore Police had some amazing moments that involved a organic, robotic penis shooting people. Episode 6 of Freedom was full of hope mixed with steampunk and sci-fi elements. Afro Samurai was cool. Seeing all my friends and hanging out with them as well as my longtime friends and girlfriend is what made the con.

I bought a laptop Tuesday night. A Compaq Presario from Staples. It has 2GB of RAM and 160 HDD and an Intel Dual Core processor, the best laptop processor. It was $489 after tax and it came with a $30 rebate.

I watched Tropic Thunder last night. It wasn't bad. The first half was a little dull, but it really picked up in the second half. I saw a cool ass costume that Robert Downey Jr.'s wore that would be a cool cosplay. I'll have to dig a picture of it up. There are some surprises in it that I can't say anything about. Go see it. A fun summer movie. It's no Dark Knight, but pretty much every movie in existence is nowhere near the quality of that film.

Otakon Schedule is up!

http://www.otakon.com/events_schedule.asp

It's a web based schedule this time instead of being a pdf file so I guess I won't be making an image for people to edit.

I don't see a lot of amazing things on the schedule this year, but that doesn't stop the fun obviously. Sadly, I won't be at Otakon until 8pm or so on Friday because of a wedding. Anybody want to meet up?

I got a new cell phone, same number. It is an LG Shine. An amazing piece of machinery. I feel like I finally have a phone that is not a standard cell phone. Something closer to a Japanese cell phone, but without coffee maker and sex slave. It will take years before we see those on our phones.

X-Games 14 this Thursday.

X-Games 14 is this Thursday, July 31, through Sunday, August 3. I created a calendar for the TV schedule which I will show.

I've been watching the X-Games for years. I remember the Tony Hawk 900 and many other events. I think this is the modern sports genres. Baseball, football, soccer, and so on are fine, but are old. The X-Games showcases sports that are still in their infancy. There is also one thing that these sports have an abundance of that the older sports do not have: creativity. Years ago, it was insane to try to get air on a skateboard. Now, it is something a basic skateboarder learns. Everyone thought backflipping a motorcycle was just asinine. Even figured what Evel Knievel did in the 70s was the height of motorcycle daredevilism. Boy, was that wrong.

This is why I love the X-Games. I hope everyone tries to at least watch some of the cove

My rant on marijuana.

This was a reply (with a little added to it) to one of my good friends as we debated marijuana and if it harmful, much more than cigarettes, for the body. It started with him quoting his botany textbook. It read:

"Regular use of marijuana for a year has been shown to have the same effect on human lungs as smoking 1 1/2 packs of cigarettes a day for 13 years."

True, but it only begs the question. Is it really that bad? It's odd. There are many people (cough cough Willie Nelson) that have smoked it for years and don't really seem to have any problems. Basically there seems to be 2 sides to this argument:

1. It is not a "gateway" drug and is much less harmful for the body than cigarettes. The Grateful Dead and every pot smoking conspiracy theorist believe in this with diehard passion.

2. It is a "gateway" drug and is very dangerous...as dangerous as cocaine or nuclear missiles (Pronounced Miss-isles. It sounds soo much cooler that way). Repubs believe in this with a passion.

And both sides seem to have their own doctors that say it is either "bad" or "kinda bad, but not going to kill you." Every industry seems to have these. Look at soy beans. There are studies that say a lot of soy could have adverse affects on the body.

All I can say is this:

1. It has been proved that most of the war on drugs has been fought against this drug, costing millions (if not billions) of tax payers dollars on it.

2. Quite a few people have died because of govt. involvement in marijuana trade. There are some that believe that the FBI allows some smugglers to bring it into the states for various reasons. Rachel Hoffman is a perfect example.

3. Let's be honest. Moderation is fine with damn near everything. I could grab a bottle of whiskey and overdose on it tonight if I really wanted, which is more like cocaine. There has been no marijuana overdoses ever.

I'm a "crazy" liberal that believes that we could profit of marijuana just like we do cigarettes and alcohol and chocolate and gasoline. Plus, it would make it safer for the people that do use it. There would be no LSD-laced pot anymore.

"I'm an engine of chaos" - The Dark Knight Review

The Dark Knight was a stunning film. Easily in my higher eschelon of films. Heath Ledger is brilliant as The Joker. I won't give away any spoilers because everyone needs to see it. Every actor and actress played their roles to the tee and made the film stand out even more with a great script.

I ended up seeing it twice so all of my friends would get to see it yesterday. Both times I enjoyed it.

There's a lot of buzz for the film maybe getting an Oscar nomination for best picture. It certainly deserves it.

My legs are feeling better. Not perfect, but a lot better. A mix of Glucosamine, Aleve, bandages, and rest paid off. It'll be a week or so before I start working out again though.

Mik, Bryan, and I went to a computer store on Monday in Cumberland. It was a Compton Swap Meet style of store. It was the kind of store where pieces of computers were just lying on old, dusty racks probably to never be used again. Most of the equipment was way outdated. They had zip drives and other older accessories. We went because Mik saw their ad and it said they had $40 laptops. They sure did, but running modern Internet websites would be a pain. Got my MGS4 PS3

My friends Joe, Aaron, and I went to Wal-mart and stood in line for 3 1/2 hours Wednesday night to get the Metal Gear Solid 4 PlayStation 3 bundle.  We had a good time that night as it felt like we were still in college and were doing the usual hang out routine. Joe bought a corn whiskey that comes in a jar at a liqour store. It was strong. Basically, it was legal moonshine. It was great fun. Also, we got $100 Wal-mart gift cards for them being Blu-ray players after another guy noticed the sale in their ad. I bought Unreal Tournament III as well.

After fooling around on the PS3 for a couple of days, it is far better than the Xbox 360 and the Wii. It has motion controls, but the Wii does use them better. I beat Metal Gear Solid 4 last night. The closest a game has come to feeling like a movie yet.

My keyboard is falling apart. The space bar is not putting spaces all the time. I have to hit it rather hard to get it to work. Some other keys are like that as well. I've had it for 5 years plus with all of the writing of my stories, it does make a lot of sense.

Working on 4 hours of sleep

I went to Pittsburgh last night with Joe to watch the Pens game on a big screen outside the Mellon Arena. We didn't have tickets so this was the next best thing.

After getting lost inside Pittsburgh, we watched most of the 1st period on the screens. There was probably 5000 people watching. So, we decided that during the 1st intermission we would find a bar to watch the rest. We found a place called Shale's can and watched it there.

It was great watching it in the Pens hometown. We might go back up Wednesday night if there is a Game 6.

My editing is going well. I'm fixing a lot of stupid errors. Only one major edit had to be done on the first story.

Here's what I said about the new Indiana Jones movie on [info]kageotogi's post:

I have no idea what they were thinking. If they took out the problem (and by problem, I think everyone that has seen it knows what I'm talking about) and gave it another explanation, it would have been good.

The movie in general was a little over the top when compared to the original three. That's the problem with making a new movie after being away for so long. Other movies had this problem as well.

Speed Racer was great, dammit

Speed Racer was a great movie no matter what people say. Sure it had some flaws, but the visuals were great. The story was very reminiscent of the anime and then characters looked how they were supposed to. Can't ask for much else.

Metal gear Solid 4 comes in out in less than a month. I can't wait. I'm buying the MGS4 PS3 bundle so I can play it. It's actually the best time to get a PS3 as many other great games and options are coming out for the system.

I've been editing my story a lot. Went through some more pages this morning. I'm catching a lot of errors that I haven't seen before. I'm going to take a day (probably Wednesday) and try to completely edit one of the shorts inside of the novel.

I've been applying to jobs. Not as many as I want. I need to get back on track.

I Didn't Write at All Today

The only other day I haven't written in for months was in April when I was in Pittsburgh all day. I decided that I need to concentrate on editing. I needed the extra time to edit. I'd never be able to edit all the stories I'd write if I continued at my pace. Better to edit as that is as essential as the actual writing.

Need to do a lot of editing

My first attempt of some sort of long novel is finished. It's not one complete story. It's a series of stories written by a character. They're odd and very funny. I'm editing them, but it's taking me a while. I don't want to invest the time to edit, which I know is absolutely insane. I need to spend a week just hardcore editing. Stop writing for a week and just edit. Maybe that'll whip me into shape.

I wrote another short story that I'm going to try and get published. It's a sci-fi short that has been in my head for a little while. I have another idea for a short 5000 word story for the Backbone Mountain Review that i need to write and have complete by mid June. Maybe try and get another one done so I have twice the chance of getting something published in there.

On my second novel which is a sci-fi novel about two alternate realities that the people can travel between. I'm 25 pages into it. I'm trying to make it a little comical, but also serious.

Good I need to edit my first novel...Bad! Plus write the other two shorts for Backbone

GTA IV

I bought GTA IV early this morning after midnight. Played it for a little while. It is pretty good. Trying to write my 5 pages so I can start playing again.

Kevin Nash was in Paw Paw, WV last Saturday for Covey Promotions Wrestling. He is huge. He is seven feet tall, but his arms are massive. Definitely in good shape for a guy that has had a heart attack and many surgeries and injuries.

Getting to the end of my story

I finished the last sort story for my novel. I'm doing some small little pieces that go in between each story that ties it into a book. I am starting the 2nd draft/editing phase shortly. If anybody would be interested in looking at my story it would be greatly appreciated and I would obviously return the favor down the road.

You've Gotta Be Kidding Me

Someone took the domain name I was going to register soon: www.stevendiggs.com. They bought it on the 11th! I wonder though that godaddy.com just registered it since I wanted of if there really is a Steven Diggs Jr. in NC?

Oh well. Have to find something else I guess.

So tired

Tekkoshocon was great. I love the intimate cons like this one. Everything was on one floor in a Radisson hotel. Everybody was nice and courteous. The video game room was busy all night. Watched some new things like Ergo Proxy and Flag. Flag is really interesting. It is about journalists in a near future war with mechs and such. Mimics the War on Terror and the show is nothing but footage from the journalists. Reminded me of Cloverfield a little in that way.

And on to the biggest thing I did at Tekkoshocon Vi...the Guilty gear XX Accent Core tournament. I am the champion. There were only 7 people signed up, but only four, including my friend Bryan and I, that showed up. Bryan played some guy while I played his friend. We creamed those guys and we fought each other in the final. I beat Bryan, (The tournament rules were each round was quickest to two, and winner with three matches advanced, confusing? It's not. It's just hard to put it into writing.) getting a little bubblehead trophy with the Accent Core Champion enscribed on it and a copy of Naruto Ultimate Ninja 3 that just came out at the end of March as prizes. Pretty sweet.

I got back from Pittsburgh this morning around 3:30. After dropping off my friends and Jen, I got home about 4. Went to sleep shortly afterwards. I'm at work now. been here since a little before eight. Had about 3 1/2 hours of sleep. When I get off at 4, I'm going to get food, fill up my car, and go sleep.y

Ha...Forgot to mention this

I'm going to an anime convention on Friday in Pittsburgh, PA called Tekkoshocon. Last year it had about 2500 people. Still a decent size, but no Otakon. I'm only going on Friday as I work on Saturday and Sunday.

The reason I'm going to this is because I have to miss all of, or all but 2 hours, Friday at Otakon this year because of a close friend's wedding. So, i looked for another con in the area.

It should be interesting. I've been to one small con, Katsucon, my first con, and am interested in going to another small one again. They feel a lot more intimate. Plus my friend Brent is going and this is his first con.

(no subject)

Well, I got into a fight with a friend today. He doesn't do anything but sit in his room with the lights off and listen to techno. He said that all the information on his computer which consists of a lot of hentai/ecchi material, that he understands things more than me. He says I hoard information and files and that understands them. He's such an ass.

In other news, I'm 3/4 of a page from finishing the 5th short story for my novel project.

I just bought the Philip K. Dick: Four Novels of the 1960s: The Man in the High Castle / The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch / Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? / Ubik. Can't wait to read it.

That was from the Saturday Night Open Mic on White Chapel.

I just made some beef ramen with teriyaki and soy sauce. I made it before. It's really good. Just waiting for it to cool down.
