This was a reply (with a little added to it) to one of my good friends as we debated marijuana and if it harmful, much more than cigarettes, for the body. It started with him quoting his botany textbook. It read:
"Regular use of marijuana for a year has been shown to have the same effect on human lungs as smoking 1 1/2 packs of cigarettes a day for 13 years."
True, but it only begs the question. Is it really that bad? It's odd. There are many people (cough cough Willie Nelson) that have smoked it for years and don't really seem to have any problems. Basically there seems to be 2 sides to this argument:
1. It is not a "gateway" drug and is much less harmful for the body than cigarettes. The Grateful Dead and every pot smoking conspiracy theorist believe in this with diehard passion.
2. It is a "gateway" drug and is very dangerous...as dangerous as cocaine or nuclear missiles (Pronounced Miss-isles. It sounds soo much cooler that way). Repubs believe in this with a passion.
And both sides seem to have their own doctors that say it is either "bad" or "kinda bad, but not going to kill you." Every industry seems to have these. Look at soy beans. There are studies that say a lot of soy could have adverse affects on the body.
All I can say is this:
1. It has been proved that most of the war on drugs has been fought against this drug, costing millions (if not billions) of tax payers dollars on it.
2. Quite a few people have died because of govt. involvement in marijuana trade. There are some that believe that the FBI allows some smugglers to bring it into the states for various reasons.
Rachel Hoffman is a perfect example.
3. Let's be honest. Moderation is fine with damn near everything. I could grab a bottle of whiskey and overdose on it tonight if I really wanted, which is more like cocaine. There has been no marijuana overdoses ever.
I'm a "crazy" liberal that believes that we could profit of marijuana just like we do cigarettes and alcohol and chocolate and gasoline. Plus, it would make it safer for the people that do use it. There would be no LSD-laced pot anymore.
